National Sports Volunteer Corps Programme

Dear Members and Associated Members

Document from the Department of Sport and Recreation regarding a volunteer corps for all sporting disciplines(248 KB PDF)

Could you please pay attention to the request for volunteers and submit the necessary information to the department as and when it appears on their website?

Mfundo Mncina of the department's e-mail address is Mfundo@srsa.gov.za for more info

Should you prefer to submit your documentation through Athletics SA, kindly complete it timeously and send it to me personally.  I will ensure that it is received by the department.

A special request from Athletics SA:

Keep us informed as to who will be volunteers in your province or otherwise.  We would like to keep record of all who have volunteered and in what capacity.  So many new requests from SASCOC and the department have started coming through in the last couple of days, that we need to make sure that we keep abreast of all the requests and answers from the provinces and associated members.

UPDATE FROM THE AGN BOARD - Marvin Draai

Apologies for the delay in the delivery of the feedback, but what a month April has been and herewith then the feedback from our Board meeting held on 26 April 2012.

Again, we have so many things happening in the province and with the Olympics looming, it was fantastic to see the qualification of more of our athletes for the big event. Caster Semenya, Stephen Mokoka, Oscar Pistorius and Godfrey Khotso Mokoena all qualified. Also, Lucas Nonyana from ABSA Gauteng North took 8th place at the Two Oceans Marathon earlier in April, so well done to all.

Track and Field

Our Track and Field season is in full swing with the events being presented being of the highest calibre. Our teams travelled across the country and faired very well and we hosted a fantastic event at Tuks on 20 April 2012 and Pilditch this past weekend.

AGN hosted the South African Open Championships on 4 and 5
May 2012, while the athlete turnout in some events were not good, it was another great example of athletics of the highest calibre with more senior athletes gaining qualification for London 2012.

Also have a look out for the Juniors and Masters coming up in the next few weeks. For more information on schedules and venues, please make contact with the office.

Cross Country

As per the latest communication that went out from the Cross Country Chairperson, our Cross Country season is going strong. A Cross Country Night Race was held on 4 May 2012 with more than 700 athletes attending with the feedback being all positive.

Let’s go out and support this breeding ground of talent and please make contact with the office for any information required.

Woman in Sport / Developing and Mentoring

While the above 2 portfolios have been around for a while, we have added it to our board and the relevant board members are working very hard in setting up strategy plans to roll out these very important portfolios.

Joel Mokonoto, Shonah Manamela and Bob Marara are the relevant board members and we look forward to
the roll out later in the year.

Road Running

As highlighted in our last communication, the Board requested a report from the Road Running(RR) commission on the race presented on 24 March. The commission had a meeting with the race organiser and the report was submitted. While the plans were in place for the delivery of the race, as this club hosts a few
races, there were too many things that happened with no back-up plan. An apology to the board and clubs were presented and contingency plans have been put in place. We look forward to the successful presentation of this race in the future.

As we can all appreciate, organising a race is not the easiest thing to do and we have all experienced some hiccups at even the best funded, and longest running races. We do however want to urge clubs and organisers to make contact with the RR commission if they are unsure of final preparations, e.g. calculations on water, marshalls, etc. I hear very often how well our races and events are organised and we therefore have a wealth of experience on doing this. Let’s try to assist where we can to ensure this legacy continues.

Our 10km SA Champs team has been finalised and is as strong as ever. This event is happening in Kimberley on 19 May 2012 and we want to wish the team well and assure them of our support. The final names will be forwarded to all the clubs soon.

General

We are investigating the delivery of a news letter as well as the update of the Website. This has been an ongoing process and we would want the planning process to be finalised by end May.

Last month we mentioned that we were investigating what is covered by the insurance we pay for when we purchase an annual licence. We have concluded that the insurance covers all registered athletes on all sanctioned events, i.e. all Road Races, and Track and Field events, as well as 2 hours prior and 2 hours
post these events(warm-up and warm down).

What this means is that you, as an athlete, are not covered while
training outside of these specific sanctioned events, e.g. your evening or morning run, etc.

Questions have been asked around temporary licence holders. This is being investigated and we will give feedback as soon as we have received all the information.

As all race and event’s organisers have found out, there is now so many things to consider when organising an event. We have been discussing a workshop on Risk Management for a while and will be communicating a date to all the clubs soon. We want to request and urge that all interested parties and all race organisers attend this event.

Athletics SA is having its Annual General Meeting on 9 June and elections will be happening. Nominations
have been requested and some of our board members have been nominated to positions on the new ASA board.

Our Gauteng North Annual General Meeting will be happening on the same day, 9 June, and we would like to request that motions be forwarded to the General Manager soonest. A formal communication will be sent out to all clubs soon regarding the dates and we look forward to a successful meeting.

Thank you for all the support and comments received after the previous communications. Any comments, corrections, etc. can be forwarded to the office and we will ensure that it is actioned.

NEW AGN WEB SITE UNDER DEVELOPMENT

PLEASE NOTE:

YES - we are fully aware that nearly everything on this Web site (besides the NOTICES on this home page) is outdated.

While a LITTLE was still relevant, since NEARLY EVERYTHING was no longer relevant, navigation to everything has now been removed, to prevent any further misunderstanding.

However, the good news is that this AGN Web site is busy being redeveloped.

Please be patient while the new Web pages are being created, populated, tested, uploaded to the Web server, tested, evaluated, updated where necessary and tested and evaluated again, and so on.

These things take a LOT of time and not everything is available yet, so, because of this and since the development is being done after hours by one person, who also has numerous other responsibilities, this will still take quite some time.

If you have any suggestions for useful and/or interesting new things that could be considered for inclusion in the new version of the AGN Web site, please send your suggestions to alanh@ainet.co.za with SUGGESTION FOR NEW AGN WEB SITE in the Subject of your message, to help to avoid it being deleted as unsolicited e-mail (Spam) from an unknown source.

Your patience while the new AGN Web site is being developed is greatly appreciated.

We will add one or two hyperlinks here to Web pages that are still relevant.

A QUERIES & FEEDBACK FORM

is now available at

We apologise for the delay in responding to the initial enquiries and feedback
that were caused by a technical glitch with the automated e-mail notification that is currently being sorted out.

However, rest assured that the equiries and feedback submitted using this form will be manually monitored from now onwards, until the automated e-mail notification is functioning properly (in the new version of the AGN Web site - which will be using more modern .Net technology).

You can check that your query or feedback was successfully submitted at

as well as checking if your issue has already been raised,
(and you can also see what issues your fellow athletes have been raising).

In future, similar forms will be available for each section of the AGN Web site.

******************************************************

TO ALL CLUBS

It has been decided by the AGN Board that from 1 March 2011 all temporary licences will sold by the AGN Office during road races meaning that clubs will no longer have this administrative burden during a race placed upon them. Clubs will still be responsible for providing the allocated pre-entry points (sport stores, etc.) with temporary licences. (We are also investigating the possibility to assist in this as long as the entry point is in the Pretoria area) Clubs can now also supply the AGN office with entry forms and the AGN Office will now also become an official pre-entry point where athletes can do pre-entries for all AGN road races during 2011.

If any club, that is hosting a race before 1 March 2011, wishes to make use of this service before this date, please inform Walter Vilakazi at gm@agn.co.za as such and necessary arrangements will be made to have temporary licences sold at such races.

Most tickets sales to win big ahead of Yellow Pages III

With the upcoming third Yellow Pages meeting in the series moving to Pretoria on 20 April, Athletics South Africa and itickets.co.za have announced a competition to enhance ticket sales.  R5000 cash will be up for grabs for the person who sells the most tickets online.

In order to be in line for the cash prize, tickets will have to be sold online via www.itickets.co.za for the coming Yellow Pages III in Pretoria.  It is very important that a personal name, company name or school’s name be entered into the referral box at the bottom left hand side of the page for identification purposes.

LJ van Zyl qualified for the Olympics Games at the same venue on 5 April during the Yellow Pages Interclub.  Since then Sunette Viljoen (javelin Throw), Cornel Fredericks (400m hurdles) and Willem Coertzen (Decathlon) have been added to the list after the Yellow Pages SA Senior Championships that took place from 13-14 April.

“After the excitement of the SA Senior Championships in Port Elizabeth we want to urge the fans to fill the stadium while enjoying top class athletics.  Friday’s event will see top athletes such as Caster Semenya and Mbulaeni Mulaudzi in the 800m and Khotso Mokoena in the long jump.  It is very important for these athletes to get support as they will try to qualify for the Olympic Games taking place in London later in August,” said Frik Vermaak, CEO of Athletics South Africa.

Simon Magakwe (ACNW) is getting closer to the SA Record in the 100m after he became the 5th fastest 100m athlete ever in South African history, equalling the 10.11sec set by Tshakile Nzimande in April 1988.  He also became the first athlete to win four consecutive titles.  Magakwe feels that Johan Rossouw’s 23 year-old national record (10.06sec) is within his grasp but that he rather wants to peak at the Olympic Games and not early in the season. “There is already a lot of pressure having to qualify twice for the Olympics,” said Magakwe.

There are many other athletes on the list that have come very close to reaching the qualifying standards in their various events and this event will be another chance for these athletes to give it a go when they line up at the ABSA Tuks Stadium.

Yellow Pages III will start at 17:30 with the last event taking place at 21:05.  Tickets are selling at for R25 for adults and R10 for children via www.itickets.co.za.  Tickets will also be available at the gate and over the phone (086 1000 291), but only online ticket sales will be considered for the R5000 prize money.  The winner will be notified by itickets.co.za.

Dates are subject to change:

Please take note that the dates for the SA Champs, as well as the Africa Masters Champs, that were scheduled for the 4th and 5th of May 2012, will need to be changed. This is due to a clash with the ASA athletics calendar.

The venue will still be Pilditch Stadium in Pretoria, the new date will most probably be 11 and 12 of May 2012, or 18 and 19 May 2012. Final confirmation will be given soon when everything is finalised. Although there are two tartan tracks, there are not enough officials for two such meetings.

LETTER 1 of 2012
from the Road Running and Walking Chairperson,
Rita van der Merwe.

Dear Club Chairpersons

I want to take this opportunity to wish every club and their management as well as their members a Wonderful 2012. This is the year of the Olympic Games, let’s get behind our athletes.

Hope that 2012 will make all your dreams come true (dream big) and that all of us will experience an injury free year. I want to request that all club chairpersons make a positive effort to attend meetings in 2012. If you cannot attend please send someone in your place. This will ensure that you as a club will be participating in the decisions made during the year to improve road-running in Gauteng North and that your club will always be on top of affairs in the province. Let’s work together, we need a 360 communication network to function properly and be one big team.

I also want to ask the Clubs to inform all members of the following rules (IAAF and ASA rules) when participating in a road race: Firstly you MUST pin your annual license to the front as well as to the back of your running vest. Take note: If you have left one/or both at home you have to purchase a temporary license. And please do not pin both to the front of your vest. Secondly NO IPods (any sound system with earphones) are allowed. All athletes, marshals and other road users safety is of utmost importance.

Then another request:

Always LISTEN to the marshals and adhere to their requests please.

For clubs hosting races, please take note that your race flyer must be approved by the RRC (Road Running Commission) 90 days prior to race date. No flyer is allowed to be distributed before approval. Send your flyer to Dennis Moleofe at dennis.moleofe@bmw.co.za or Moleofe@gmail.com

In order for the RRC and the office to keep in touch with all clubs, please ensure that any changes regarding the contact details are forwarded to the office.

Greetings in running

*The following list of races is as up to date as we can manage to get them.

Races unavoidably often have to be changed from what was originally tentatively planned in the provisional fixture list that was published at the beginning of the year - circumstances change, sponsors fall away more often than before in the current tight economic climate, and organisers sometimes agree to swop dates due to differing circumstances.

The only certainty in life (besides death and taxes) is CHANGE. ;-)

So, the only practical option is to check this list near to the time of the race, which should help to pick up changes that are decided in advance.

Obviously, there can still be last minute changes that will be impossible to list
- for example, due to extreme weather at the time of the race.

The safest will be to contact the race organisers, where possible, if in doubt.

To assist with that, we will try to provide contact details, where available - and in a prelude to the upcoming makeover of the AGN Web site, we will also try to add an additional service to provide links to electronic copies of race flyers,
(where available).

2012 TWO OCEANS

Entry Counter 25 Feb 2012:
21km 16000 of 16000 ENTRIES CLOSED
56km 8717 of 11000 ENTRIES CLOSED

Race Date 07 Apr. 2012

Online entries for next year’s ultra marathon opened on 5 October 2011. The entry process has been split and participants will be able to enter online for the 56km ultra marathon only from 5 October. The 43rd event takes place on Easter Saturday 7 April 2012. Participants are encouraged to get their qualifying marathon done as soon as they can and to submit their entry to avoid disappointment.

The qualifying window is from 1 September 2011 to 7 March 2012. South African entrants wanting to run the ultra marathon must belong to a registered ASA running club and have a valid provincial licence number, as no temporary licences will be issued for the 56km event.  http://www.TwoOceansMarathon.org.za

Runners who missed out on an Old Mutual Two Oceans half marathon entry will have the chance to bid for one when 21 charity entries go up for auction, as part of a major fundraising initiative for the Two Oceans Marathon Initiative (TOMI), the event’s charity foundation. Bidding for the 21 half marathon entries is scheduled to open on Thursday 1 December 2011. Entries open at R900 each and provide those participants who missed the entry deadline with a chance to secure a half marathon entry. Interested participants can post their bid atwww.oldmutual.co.za/twooceansmarathon

The auction runs for 21 days until Wednesday 21 December 2011, with one entry awarded to the highest bidder of each day. Winners will be announced the day after each bid. Winning bids will also receive a PUMA product voucher and their race entry includes an ‘A’ seeding. The top two successful bids will each receive an invite to the VIP hospitality area at the finish line on race day.

Race director Rowyn James said that entries for the 2012 Old Mutual Two Oceans half marathon closed in a record time of nine days and the office and social media sites have been inundated with calls and appeals from disappointed runners who missed out. “This is a way for us to help a few of them, while also raising funds for our charity drive TOMI.”

A record field of 16 000 will line up in Newlands on Easter Saturday 7 April making it the biggest field ever, as well as the biggest half marathon in the country.

“The auction was first introduced for the 2009 event and has proved to be a successful, yet novel way to raise some extra funds for charity. It provides those select few who weren’t able to get an entry with a chance to still run the event and support a worthy cause at the same time,” said Joy Khaole, Head: Group Sponsorships, Old Mutual.

Two Oceans Trail Run

Entries for the trail runs will open at 10h00 on 18 January 2012 so make a note on your computer, your mobile, your diary, whatever works for you as you will need to enter as soon as possible, as entries sold out in less than a day for the 2011 event. You’ve been warned!

Norrie Williamson has put together various Two Oceans training programmes to suit everyone, no matter what your goal at www.oldmutual.co.za/twooceansmarathon.

PARKING INFO FOR THE OLD MUTUAL TWO OCEANS MARATHON:

With the increase in the half marathon field, plus over 9 000 runners in the ultra field, the Two Oceans Marathon is putting on extra facilities for participants to make getting to the start and leaving the finish as hassle free as possible.  Final details are in the event magazine, plus in the goodie bags and there will be a stand at the Expo featuring maps and marshals to explain the various options.  Remember the best way to avoid stress on race day, no matter where you park, is to ARRIVE EARLY!

THE START: There are four large school fields available within a 1km radius of the start.

·         Above the Main Road between the start and the finish at UCT, you will find the following school fields: Westerford High School, SACS High & Junior School.  These are within 500m of the start, they soon fill up, and there is major congestion on the M3 via Princess Anne Road to these points.

·         Below the Main Road near the Newlands Cricket Stadium and Kelvin Grove Club, are the two Groote Schuur High School fields.  They are approximately 1km from the start and there will be marshals to guide you to the two starting points.

·         Groote Schuur High School, Westerford High School and SACS High & Junior Schools are available for parking at a cost of R30 per car.  Please consider Groote Schuur as Westerford and both the SACS Schools fill up quickly.  Take Liesbeek Parkway from either Cape Town or the Northern Suburbs; following the marshals and signage.

THE FINISH: The same shuttle service as in 2011 will run at regular intervals from the finish to all the schools.  The service departs from the UCT Info Centre adjacent to the Indoor Sports Centre.

MAGNOLIA LONG RUN - Fri 27 April 2012 (public holiday) - 45 KM - with water points

Hi from Magnolia Road Runners,

Magnolia will be holding our tenth Long Run on 27th April (Friday is a public holiday), and would like to invite your club and your runners to join us on the day.

With less than 5 weeks before Comrades and with all the other race activities in the same period we though it would be more appropriate to reduce the distance to 45km and is ideally placed for a long slow run prior to Comrades. Please see flyer (39 KB Word) for all the details.

Non-Magnolia members: All runners from all clubs are most welcome, it will be much appreciated if you could please forward to your chairperson or display our flyer on your clubhouse notice board.

If at any time it seems as though ANY Web page (including this one) is not reflecting changes that you expect should have been made, it is likely that your browser is displaying an old version that has been cached locally in the Temporary Internet Files directory on your hard drive.

If you REFRESH the Web page (Ctrl-F5 may be necessary) then the expected updates should appear.

In isolated cases you may need to clear your cache to see the expected updated page.

This works differently (but similarly) in different browsers - but in Internet Explorer go to TOOLS in the top menu, then INTERNET OPTIONS (the last option at the bottom) and then under GENERAL (which will open by default) select DELETE under BROWSING HISTORY (in the middle).

Then close your browser and when you open it again it won't load all the stored history of Web pages that you have recently visited into the cache, but will instead be forced to check the Web server for the latest version of the Web page, and the expected changed Web page should be displayed.

(But all of this is generally unlikely to be needed - mostly REFRESH should be enough to display the latest, updated, version of the Web page that you were expecting).

If you do nothing, eventually the cached copy in your Temporary Internet Files will expire and then you will eventually see the updated Web page.

If you don't want to lose the cached copies of the Web pages that you have visited recently, just using a different browser (say CHROME instead of IE) that has NOT been used recently to view the Web page will also display the updated Web page from the Web server immediately, since there will be nothing in the local cache to use.

The purpose of the local cache is to speed up loading of recently visited Web pages slightly, because it is obviously a bit quicker to read a stored Web page from your local hard drive than it is to go and fetch it over the Internet.

LATEST LEAGUE REPORT FROM KEN

Hi

Once again my thanks to those clubs that responded with their club’s corrections so promptly. There were, however, a total of 10 clubs that did not come back to me with their corrections in the 15km run and 2 in the 15km walk. I felt that I must and get these logs out before the next league which is this coming Saturday.

Thanks to Margaret Chamberlain for her patience and help with sorting out problems.

God Bless

Ken

Hi

Fit 2000 were the race organisers for the Filadelfia Gardens league race on Feb 07. I spoke to one of the Fit 2000 contact persons for their race concerning a helpers race. He said that he didn’t think that they were going to have one … but this hasn’t been confirmed. If they do have one I will have to adjust these league logs.

Thank you to all those clubs that sent their corrections through so promptly last week. Fortunately there were not many corrections that needed to be made.

AGN CROSS COUNTRY SECTION

Newest information will be added at the top of this section, from now on -

i.e. just below here.

Updated 13/5/2012

Cross Country News

Andre Gobey 072 191 0538

Dear Cross Country friends,

It would be difficult to top the excitement of Friday’s New Balance Cross Country night race. The event
attracted 780 athletes this year with thrilling finishes in all events.

Gladwin Mzazi defended the title he won in 2011 in the senior men 8 Km with success by leading from the
gun. He was followed home by fellow national athletes Jeffrey Gwebu and Motsamai Matone. We saw an
upset in the ladies 4 Km race with Lebo Phalula taking the title from defending champion Rutendo Nyahora
from Zimbabwe with track star Mapaseka Makhanya taking third spot.

Congratulations to team New Balance Gauteng North and Run-away-Sport for an amazing event. We
equally appreciate the contributions of the Tshwane University of Technology who saw the potential of the
event and decided to partner with us. It will not be long before this event will be in the same league as
prestige track events like the Yellow pages series.

The rest of the Season:

The Soshanguve event was the fourth of the six pre-season events. To qualify for the team that will represent Athletics Gauteng North at Middleburg, on 9 June 2012, athletes will have to take part in at least three of the first six events. The selectors will compare the positions of the athletes after the final event and we will announce the team as soon as it is approved by the AGN Board. The intention is to include 12 athletes in each age category.

To qualify for the team that will represent Athletics Gauteng North at the National championships at Amanzimtoti on 8 September 2012, athletes will have to take part in at least two of the events after the inter-provincial as well as the Gauteng North Championships. The selectors may also take the performances of the pre-season events in account for senior, master and secondary school athletes.
