DEVELOPMENT
PHILOSOPHY
Development as enshrined in the objects of the AGN Constitution is the strongest commitment to Gauteng North development of athletics. This, of course, is a huge and complex task. The challenge is to create the conditions under which, athletes, coaches and Technical Officials can express their potential and derive maximum benefit in athletics.
The central principle of the AGN’s development philosophy is co-operation among AGN, commissions, clubs, athletes, coaches, technical officials, schools, parents, tertiary institutions and business. Each associate member listed above has a leading role in operating and developing athletics. AGN’s contribution is to assist associate members in fulfilling this role as effectively as possible.
STRATEGY
The AGN development strategy focuses on eight areas of activity, which contribute to and are indispensable for the growth and strength of athletics in our province.
- Athletics Culture
- Establishment of clubs
- Selection of representative teams
- Development squads
- Development of Coaches and Technical Officials
- Athletes Talent Identification
- Competition opportunities and organization
- Scientific and Medical Support

CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE
The AGN Centre of Excellence (COE) provides training and development to Technical Officials, Coaches, Administrators and athletes. The Centre is managed and supervised under AGN control.
The COE is established in response to the growing demand for information about appropriate training programs, which includes coaching and technical officiating courses.
The aim of the COE is to assist the AGN, athletes, technical officials and coaches to make the right decisions regarding the suitability of programs to meet their specific needs and requirements.
The main role of the COE is to function as a “development training Centre” of AGN, supporting the work of the development department and providing a focal point for the programme of development actions in the province.
Many athletes will benefit from time spent at the Centre and will improve their performances at provincial and national championships as a result. Indeed, a number of Center’s trained athletes in the country have gone on to become medal winners at provincial and national competitions. (E.g. Boland and Free State Athletics are performing better today).
The Boland and Free State Athletics success is a motivating factor that we must also take our Centre of Excellence serious.
Athletics Gauteng North Centre of Excellence is based at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT).
TUT to a larger extend have high-quality facilities, support services and appropriate accommodation that we may use to carry out our activities.
