Track & Field: General Information

Rules for AGN Seniors, Sub Seniors, Youth and Provincial Track & Field Championships

  1. Entries on the prescribed forms at R25,00 per entry. (Maximum 3 events).

  2. Athletes can enter at the AGN office from 17 February 2005 between 08:00 and 16:00 on weekdays for the Seniors and from 10 February 2005 for the Youth, Junior and Sub-Seniors. Closing date: 1 week (19 - 26) February prior to the championships for Sub-Youth, Youth & Juniors.

  3. Athlete must be a registered athlete to be able to enter.

  4. Athletes are allowed to participate in both the Junior and Senior Championships but only by means of two separate entries. An athlete cannot participate in the Junior Championships in an event in his age group and also in an event in a higher age group except if the relevant event is not available in his/her own age group.

  5. In the event of clashes of events, athletes would have to determine their own priority.

  6. HEATS:

    If 3 heats, the final is composed of the first 2 in each heat plus the two best remaining times to fill 8 lanes. In the case of a tie in the 8th place, 9 athletes will go to the finals.

    If 4 or more heats, the first two in each heat plus the best times to take 16 atletes through to a semi-final, whereafter the best 4 per heat to the final.

    800 - 1500m: Maximum of 16 atletes per heat. First 4 per heat and the best times to take 12 to the finals.

    3000m: Only a final. If too many atletes, use will be made of the double start.

    FIELD EVENTS:

    If 8 or less competitors, all athletes get 6 efforts with a maximum of 1 throw per round. If more than 8 competitors, all get 3 efforts and the best 8 still with a maximum of 1 effort per round, another 3 efforts. In the case of a tie between competitors 8 & 9, 9 competitors will go through to the final.

    JUMPS: Same rule applies as for throws except when there are more than 18 athletes entered. In this case two heats will be scheduled.
  7. REPORTING:

    Field athletes report to the point of competition 40 minutes before the start of the event. Track athletes report 30 minutes before the start of the first heat, at the call room. Any athlete who reports after these times will be regarded as reporting late and thus will be disqualified.

 

 

 Selection Criteria for the National Track & Field Championships



  1. PREAMBLE

          Whereas;

    1. The sole purpose of the team selection criteria contained herein is to provide AGN with an objective process to be employed for the selection of teams to the SA National Championships;
    2. The primary purpose of sending Athletics Gauteng North teams to the SA National Championships is for the teams to bring back glory to the province, in the form of medals, or for the team members to at least end in the finals (final 8) of their events and achieve good positions on the National Ranking Lists.

          Therefore it is resolved as follows:

    1. That all athletes who have been selected to represent AGN at the SA National Championships have an obligation to avail themselves of such selection, including team meetings;

    2. That all selected athletes who have potential to proceed to the finals of their events at the SA National Championships should exploit that potential to the fullest; and
    3. That all athletes who qualify to be in the finals of their events should proceed to represent AGN in those finals thereby exploiting to the fullest their possibilities of winning medals.

    4. That all athletes who have been selected and who wish to withdraw from the team must inform the office/team managers in writing beforehand of their withdrawel from the team.

    5. That all athletes who submit medical certificates declaring that the athlete is unfit/injured cannot participate at the AGN Championships and subsequent requests to be re-considered will be subject to medical examination by the doctor appointed by AGN.

    6. That all athletes who have been selected must be able to produce proof of identity on request, for age verification.

    The team selection criteria (the criteria) contained herein are applicable only for SA National Championships.

  3. THE CRITERIA

     

    2.1 The AGN Track and Field, Cross Country and Road Running Championships (to be known as the "Trials") will serve as trials to select teams to SA National Championships.

    2.2 The (AGN Championships) Trials will be strictly compulsory for all athletes who wish to be selected for teams to SA National Championships. Athletes who miss the (AGN Championships) Trials will not be considered for selection.

    2.3 The Provisional Team will be announced immediately after the (AGN Championships) Trials, and the Final Team will be announced at a later date, closer to the SA National Championships.

    2.4 All athletes who are placed in the top three in the finals of their specialist events, at the (AGN Track and Field and Road Running Championships) Trials and achieve 900 points on the (ABSA Scoring Tables) will automatically be selected into the Provisional Team.

    2.5 All athletes who are placed in the top six at the (AGN Cross Country Championships) Trials and have participated in any three AGN Leagues and one inter-provincial, will automatically be selected into the Provisional Team.

    2.6 All athletes who are placed in the top three in the finals of their specialist events, at the (AGN Championships) Trials and achieve 1000 points on the (ABSA Scoring Tables) will be deemed to have achieved automatic selection into the Final Team.

    2.7 Only athletes in the Provisional Teams will be considered for selection into the Final Team.

    3.1 Performances achieved in indoor competitions will be accepted.

    3.2 The following performances will not be accepted:

    1. Performances achieved in mixed (including male and female participants) track and field events.
    2. Wind-assisted performances.
    3. Hand-timed performances.

    3.3 Any exceptions to these selection criteria will be made at the sole discretion of the AGN Executive Board.

    3.4 These criteria are subject to the rules of ASA.
